GUARDIANS GUIDE

The Cool
Trusted Adult

Whether you're an aunt, a big sister, a godparent, or a guardian—you occupy a magical space. You're an authority figure who doesn't feel like the "police." Use that superpower.

Being the Village

"She calls me 'Cool Auntie.' She told me about her first kiss before she told her mom. I listened, made sure she was safe, and encouraged her to tell her mom when she was ready."

Tasha
Aunt to Kiki (14)

"As a foster mom, building trust takes time. We don't force 'big talks.' We just do face masks and watch movies. The conversations happen in the quiet moments between the fun."

The Mentor Toolkit

The "Vibe Check"

You speak her language (or at least try to). Use that. Send the funny TikTok, use the slang (correctly, please). It shows you're paying attention to her world.

Be the Safe Space

If she confesses something tricky, your first job is safety, not judgment. "Thank you for trusting me. Let's figure this out."

Validate, Then Guide

Validate her feelings first ("That sounds really hard"). Only then offer guidance. She needs to feel heard before she can hear you.
